Common Drugs and Medications to Treat High Blood Pressure

Considering taking medication to treat High Blood Pressure? Below is a list of common medications used to treat or reduce the symptoms of High Blood Pressure. Follow the links to read common uses, side effects, dosage details and read user reviews for the drugs listed below.

Vasotec (Enapril Maleate):

Brand name for enalapril, Vasotec is one of the most effective anti-hypertensive drugs in the market. Belonging to the angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors) category of drugs, Vasotec helps to keep raising blood pressure under control thereby reducing the risk factors of this disease. Since hypertension works out the heart muscles to cause early arterial failure, Vasotec stands in the way and helps to keep your heart healthy, indirectly. Like all other ACE inhibitors, Vasotec checks the functionality of enzymes that restricts the path of smooth blood flow through the blood vessel. This helps the heart to pump more blood at ease and with lesser pressure. Vasotec is compimented with other drugs to prevent cardiac failures. However, a qualified physicain needs to be qualified before taking this drug.

Zebeta (bisoprolol fumarate):
Zebeta is another name for Bisoprolol, which is a beta-adrenergic blocker or blood pressure medication. Zebeta influences the body’s specific response to nerve impulses, thus taking some of the excessive workload off of the patient’s heart. The heart therefore doesn’t need as much blood and oxygen. A treatment with Zebeta minimizes chest pain (which is normally caused by physical strain) and regulates the heart rhythm.

Prinivil (Lisinopril):
Prinivil is a popular drug that belongs to a wide class of medicines generally known as ACE inhibitors (angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors). This product is generally prescribed to patients who are suffering from congestive heart failure, high blood pressure or to patients who have recently suffered a heart attack.
Zanidip (Lercanidipine HCL):
Generic Zanidip (Lercanidipine HCL) tablets contain the active ingredient lercanidipine hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called a calcium channel blocker. Lercanidipine is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.Lercanidipine works by slowing the movement of calcium through the muscle cells that are found in the walls of blood vessels. It does this by blocking 'calcium channels' in these muscle cells. Calcium is needed by muscle cells so that they can contract. Lercanidipine reduces the amount of calcium available to muscle cells and so makes them relax. Lercanidipine acts specifically on the muscle cells in the walls of arteries, causing them to relax. This allows the arteries in the body to widen. The relaxing and widening of the small arteries in the body decreases the resistance that the heart has to push against in order to pump the blood around the body. This reduces the pressure within the blood vessels. Lercanidipine can therefore be used to lower high blood pressure. Lercanidipine can also have a widening effect on the small arteries in the heart, which improves the supply of blood, and therefore the oxygen to the heart. This reduces the effort the heart has to make to pump blood around the body.

Lozol (Indapamide):
Treating high blood pressure alone or along with other medicines. It is also used to treat salt and water retention (swelling) associated with congestive heart failure. Indapamide is a diuretic. It works by causing the kidneys to eliminate large amounts of water and salts.
